Travel Award for Biocuration 2014

The International Society for Biocuration and The Seventh International Biocuration Conference (2014) are pleased to provide current ISB members with travel fellowships for students, junior curators, curators from low-income countries, and curators from countries suffering from natural disasters. We intend to support 6 applicants.

Please note that these fellowships complement those graciously offered by CIHR/OICR, thus, the application processes are independent.

Please note that applying for a fellowship does not guarantee that you will receive funding.


The travel fellowship will cover your registration and assist with your travel costs with a total of CAD$1,000. A traveller's check for this amount will be handed over to you at the end of the conference.

Requirements and procedures:

Each applicant for a travel fellowship must satisfy the following conditions:

  • The applicant must be a current ISB member.
  • The applicant must have been selected for a poster or oral presentation at the 7th International Biocuration Conference.
  • Only the presenting author from a multi-author abstract may apply for a fellowship.
  • The applicant must submit an accompanying letter explaining why s/he is requesting travel funds: please remember we are encouraging junior curators, curators originating from low income countries, and curators from countries suffering from natural disasters.
  • Application materials should be sent to with the subject line 'Travel Fellowships to Biocuration 2014".

The applicant should review visa requirements and make any necessary arrangements of her/his own.

Notification of acceptance: 14 March, 2014

The Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, through a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, will be supporting a limited number of students and trainees (undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral fellow, post-health professional degree fellow) to attend the 7th International Biocuration Conference to be held at The Hart House in Toronto, Canada from April 6-9, 2014. Funds Available

It is anticipated that up to nine travel grants will be awarded. Each grant is for a maximum of $1,000 (CDN).


Applicants must:

  • Be registered in a master's or doctoral program, or in-training at a post-doctoral or post-health professional degree level;
  • Have been accepted to present either a poster or an oral presentation during the conference. However, those who have not yet submitted an abstract are also eligible; please submit your abstract thorough the Biocuration 2014 website;
  • Only the presenting author from a multi-author abstract may apply for a fellowship;
  • Have submitted a completed travel award application form: .

Canadian residency or citizenship is not a requirement.

Allowable Costs

The award is intended to cover expenses related to the Biocuration 2014 Conference and only the following costs can be reimbursed: travel (economy fare only), accommodation and registration fees. Keep all original receipts, as they are required for reimbursement purposes following the conference.

Receipt of Award

All travel awards are conditional upon conference attendance and abstract acceptance. Following the 7th International Biocuration Conference, Travel Award recipients will be required to complete an expense claim and provide proof of abstract acceptance to receive reimbursement of costs. Original receipts are required for reimbursement purposes.
